Education Minister's simple sums confuse educated

Claims by Education Minister Ruairí Quinn that 30 per cent of face time in classes is devoted to Irish and Religion cannot be confirmed because not enough time has been spent teaching Maths.

“It’s a dilemma,” an education expert said. “What’s per cent?”

“If we are worried about literacy and numeracy and this figure is close to being correct . . . then we have to ask ourselves questions,” Mr Quinn told The Irish Times.

“Why ask yourself questions when you’re too poorly educated to answer them?” a former student said reasonably.
