Dublin mayor to get prime begging position on O’Connell Bridge

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

The directly-elected mayor of Dublin will have exclusive rights to a prime begging position on O’Connell Bridge, according to draft legislation published today.

Existing beggars will have to vacate the area unless they successfully run for the mayor’s position. Earnings from begging will be exempt from income tax as the position of mayor will be designated a charity.

The move has prompted anger among the city’s beggars. “This is a deliberate attempt to replace beggars with chancers,” a beggar said.

The mayor’s principal role will be in land-use planning, including housing, waste management and water services. “Clearly these areas will also provide revenue opportunities for the right candidate,” a spokesman said.
