Public service unions and professional bodies were united in condemning the Government’s proposed ‘Work for your Dole’ scheme this morning.
“This is the thin edge of the wedge,” a union official said. “Next they’ll be trying to get people to work for their salaries. We will not countenance that.”
Minister for Social Protection Éamon Ó Cuív is drawing up plans to offer 10,000 people currently claiming unemployment benefits social employment in the community.
“This is a cynical attempt to use the unemployed to put pressure on the employed,” a professional said. “The concept of earning your pay is outdated and will not be entertained.”
