Fine Gael’s jubilation at its excellent performance in the various elections on June 5th has been crushed by the devastating realisation that Enda Kenny is still party leader and, unless something can be done, will lead the party into the next general election. As if that weren’t bad enough Fine Gael HQ is wrestling with a dilemma posed by the Mirish Tidy Towns Association to name Mr Kenny Tidy Man of the Year.
The disastrous nature of this development seems to have gone over Mr Kenny’s head, sources say he was actually quite pleased and intends to accept the award. At the same time Fine Gael spin doctors have failed to convince the Tidy Towns people to change their minds.
“You just couldn’t credit it,” a senior party source said. “We live in a country where ordinary people dedicate their bank holiday weekends to littering on a heroic scale and we end up with a party leader who is a poster boy for the Tidy Towns Association. It’s a nightmare.
