The Government is close to being able to confirm that a state funeral for Shergar will form the centrepiece of a visit by Queen Elizabeth II to Dublin next year.
The Mire has learned that senior civil servants have been locked in negotiations with former provisional IRA members in an effort to locate the remains of the Derby-winning racehorse, kidnapped in 1983.
The government believe a Shergar funeral can act as a symbol of the Troubles, while also representing the Queen’s love of horses.
“She’s mad for the horses and she loves a ceremony,” a source said. “What could be better?”
“Everything hinges on finding Shergar’s remains,” the source added. “Although you can pick up an ould horse fairly handy these days.”

Perhaps we might also return the fiver Queen Victoria sent for the Great Diet. Plus interest, of course, which up to a few years ago would have brought the sum to E103,556,334,987,655,221,451.03 but now of course it is worth E2.83. Maybe it is too little too late but I am sure we could throw in a couple of vintage Walsh’s spiceburgers and she will appreciate the gesture and find the spicburgers will remain with her for days and days..
I think it’s a mighty idea and will ask around here if anyone can remember where they saw him last…
That would be very helpful. Thank you.
