Hopes that future civil servants could achieve second division status were dismissed by public service trade unions this morning.
“Second division status is a distant aspiration,” a union source said. “It would take years of investment and planning to even achieve third division status.”
The comment followed a suggestion by the chairman of the Higher Public Servants Remuneration Committee that future generations of top civil servants may be “second division” material.
“The suggestion is outlandish and unhelpful,” the source added. “Such a fanciful goal was never mentioned in social partnership talks.”
