Horse shaggers relieved as Cowen says no more curbs on rural sports

July 9, 2010

Devotees of the ancient and gentle tradition of horse shagging were relieved today when Taoiseach Brian Cowen promised he will not support further restrictions on rural pursuits.

The move follows backbench concern that the tradition of a local councillor’s son shagging a white mare in front of the entire village on his 21st birthday might be under threat.

“The son is 20 now. He’s looking forward to it. He talks about nothing else. It would be a crime if this rite of passage was taken away from him,” a rural councillor said.

He said the mare-shagging tradition also celebrated a special bond between father and son. “You see the father holds the tail,” he said. “Someone has to hold the tail.”
