The Health Service Executive (HSE) has admitted it is investigating hundreds of incidents where people were erroneously informed that they had been born.
In all 233 individuals and their extended families were today coming to terms with the reality of not existing.
“In many cases it seems that we told women who came in for routine appointments that they had given birth,” a source said. “Others just received letters informing them of the fact.”
“Sadly, many of those under the misapprehension they had been born went on to have families of their own,” the source added. “However, we can remedy that by taking themĀ into care. The HSE gave life but we can also take it away.”
Parents and spouses of those who exist in error may be eligible for compensation.
