Media candidates offer hope

June 3, 2009

The Mire has been inundated with calls, emails and texts from people expressing hope and optimism for the first time in many months. The cause of this outburst of positive thinking? The prospect that more media professionals might enter politics and put the country back on track.

“I am overcome with gratitude to George Lee, Mairead McGuinness and Susan O’Keeffe,” said one emailer. “Mireland needs their colleagues to join them. The country needs people who are genuine experts at absolutely everything to get us out of this mess.”

This sentiment was echoed by a caller who sounded remarkably like Vincent Browne. He called on the people to lobby their newspapers and broadcasting stations to form a government. The caller suggested that Vincent Browne could head this government as prime minister in perpetuity. “He would be just the man for the job,” he said.

A text message from a recently unemployed man watching daytime television was equally enthusiastic: “Blathnaid Ni Chofaigh could be Chief Whip,” it said.
