The Taoiseach has promised that the Government parties will work closely with Fine Gael over the summer in an effort to persuade Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny to campaign for a no vote in the second Lisbon referendum on October 2nd.
In June, The Mire revealed that the Government’s secret plan for success in the referendum hinged on persuading Mr Kenny to oppose it. We can now reveal that senior Fine Gael strategists are in agreement with the government. It has also been revealed that this suggested strategy is the brainchild of President Sarkozy of France who recently promised to save Mireland.
The delicate matter of when and how to break the news to Mr Kenny has yet to be decided. “We think he will do the right thing,” a Fine Gael source said, “although he probably won’t understand it.”
Mr Kenny gave a statement yesterday that gave rise to concern that he may be aware of the cross-party plan: “I would not underestimate the strength of the feeling of confusion that exists,” he said.
However, the Fine Gael source said Mr Kenny might not even have been talking about Lisbon: “He makes that sort of statement on a wide range of issues.”
