There were red faces in the Department of Education this morning after it emerged that many people were awarded Leaving Certficates without going anywhere.
Education Minister Mary Coughlan was reported to be spitting teeth at the news that no follow-up checks are carried out to ensure that Leaving Certificate recipients actually leave.
“I mean what is the fucking point?” Ms Coughlan is thought to have said.
“In future the Leaving Certificate will only be awarded at foreign ports to Irish citizens who can prove they do not have a return ticket to Ireland,” a spokesman said.
