Shell ‘might pay for everything’

June 9, 2009

Shell to Sea campaigners have warmly greeted Shell’s decision to pay $15.5m dollars for having absolutely nothing to do with killing anyone in Nigeria in 1995.
The campaigners are hoping that Shell might enter a similar settlement with them for having nothing to do with killing anyone in Belmullet. The fact that no one has been killed in Belmullet – unlike the situation in Nigeria where nine oil activists were executed in 1995 – should make a settlement easier to reach, campaigners believe.
It is thought the settlement in Mireland could be significantly higher than that in Nigeria as there seems to be no limit to the amount of people Shell have had nothing to do with killing here.
A spokesman for the Government said they were tentatively hopeful that Shell might see fit to broaden the scope of things they have nothing to do with but are happy to pay for: “The Health Service and social welfare bill would be a good start,” the spokesman said. “This could really turn things around for Mireland. You never know, they might pay for everything.”
