The Government is confident that it will be able to completely eradicate workplace fatalities and injuries by 2014 if the economy and unemployment trends stay on their current course.“We are delighted to be able to say that we are leading the way across Europe in eliminating deaths due to accidents in the workplace,” a Government spokesman told a joint press conference with the social partners.
The spokesman said a number of factors could be contributing to improved safety in the workplace. “However,” he said, “it is clear the key factor is the huge surge in unemployment.
“We are confident that our policy of eradicating employment will also lead to the complete and total eradication of workplace fatalities. This gives us great comfort in these difficult times.”
A spokesman for the trade unions said unemployment was a small price to pay for a life saved. “For too long now workers have risked their lives in appalling conditions and too many have paid the ultimate price,” he said. “We can now look forward to a time when no workers lives are at risk. This would not have been possible without the social partnership process.”
