Suggestions that Senator Ivor Callely only claimed reasonable and modest expenses for his first days as a TD in 1989 have been dismissed as outrageous, absurd and a slur.
Informed sources said the Senator had been elected to Dublin Corporation four years before becoming a TD and would have known a thing or two about claiming expenses.
“Ivor was not a callow youth when he entered Leinster House,” a source said. “To suggest that he would only have claimed modest expenses is outrageous, absurd and an unwarranted slur.”
The Seanad Committee investigating Senator Callely’s expenses and complaints against three other Senators will meet today to consider the response of all four to the claims against them.
